Swedberg Funeral Home has a long history of being a part of the Shawano
community. The building itself was built before 1909. And over the past
90 years there have been numerous architectural and ownership changes.
In 1931, Karl Schweers established the Schweers Funeral Home. Mr. Schweers
owned and operated the funeral home until his death in 1958. At that time
the Carl Born family purchased the funeral home and it became known as
Born Funeral Home. Ten years later Carl, and his wife Janet, purchased
the former Gaffney Funeral Home of Gresham, in order to expand their service
area. With the added workload of operating two funeral home locations,
Mr. Born added Lon Swedberg to his staff.
Lon was originally from Webster, Wisconsin, where he grew up helping his
father and brother in their family funeral home. In 1971, he and his wife
Ellen moved to the Shawano area. Seven years later they became part owners
of the funeral home with Carl and Janet Born and the name was changed
to Born-Swedberg Funeral Home. After Mr. Born's death in 1985, the Swedberg
family purchased the balance of the funeral home and changed the name
to Swedberg Funeral Home.
The Swedberg Funeral Home has undergone many internal and external changes.
In 1989, the Shawano location facilities were expanded, adding a large
chapel and a wheel chair accessible entrance. Later, a neighboring lot
was purchased and cleared to create a large parking area. The Swedberg
Funeral Home is also constantly improving their internal operations so
they can meet the needs and desires of the families they serve.
